Grass is very important. Animals can't live without grass. Some animals eat grass. Cows and sheep are grass eaters. Other animals eat the grass-eaters. Lions and wolves may eat cows and sheep.

What if there were no grass in the world? What would happen? There would be no food for the grass eaters. They would die. The other animals would die too. They would have no grass-eaters to eat.

3

People can't live without grass either. We eat grass eaters. We get meat and milk from cows. meat from sheep.

People are grass-eaters too! You might say, "But I don't eat grass!" Yes, you do. You eat rice and corn, don't you? They're grasses. You eat cereal, don't you? Most cereals are made from grasses. You eat sugar. Sugar comes from the grass family.

There are many kinds of grasses. There is the green grass in yards. There are grasses that you eat. In cold countries there are little grasses. But in hot countries grass can be fifty feet tall!

4

This huge grass is called bamboo. Many people eat young bamboo plants. They build houses out of bamboo stems. They make clothes and rope out of bamboo. Bamboo is a very useful grass.
