Recap

  • What is a noun clause?

  • A noun clause is a group of words used as a noun that also contains a subject and a predicate

3

"That" Noun Clause

  • Usually, adding "that" in the beginning of our sentences doesnt make the sentence appear as you may want it

  • SO, we will move it to the end of the sentence

4

Example

  • "That the store was being robbed was scary to the people."

  • 1) Identify the noun clause: That the store was being robbed

  • 2) Move it to the end of the sentence: Was scary to the people that the store was being robbed

  • 3) Use an "introductory word" like "it" in the beginning of the sentence to act as the subject: It was scary to the people that the store was being robbed

5

Open Ended

Rewrite this sentence:

That cheetahs could run so fast scared its prey.

6

Noun Clause As An Appositive

  • This occurs when "the fact" is used before the clause

  • As in the sentence: The fact that George read the book doesnt mean he liked it

7

Converting From Compound Sentences

  • We can use "that fact that" phrase to rewrite a lot of compound sentences

  • Sentence: The video went viral, but that scared me.

  • 1) Add "The Fact That" in front of the sentence: The fact that the video went viral, but that scared me.

  • 2) Remove the conjunction "but" and any other modifier that "helped" the conjunction: The fact that the video went viral scared me

8

Open Ended

Convert:

"The fruit tasted strange, and that made me throw it out."

9

Common Error Fixes

  • "The people thought that if the FBI was watching that they would have so much information."

  • Why is this sentence wrong?

  • Because the adverb clause signal "that" was repeated after the clause signal

  • FIX: Simply remove the second "that". This brings us to: "The people thought that if the FBI was watching they would have so much information."
