Las normas del instituto
The rules of the school
2
Lesson objectives :
1. Learn how to express the necessity / obligation
2. Revise what an INFINITIVE is
3. Learn different verbs in Spanish
3
There are different ways to express the necessity / obligation in Spanish :
Tener que + infinitive : to have to
Es obligatorio + infinitive : it is compulsory to
Hay que + infinitive : you/ one must
(No) se debe + infinitive : you must (not)
(No) se permite + infinitive : you are (not) allowed to
(No) se puede : you can(not)
Está prohibido + infinitive : it is forbidden to
4
As you may have noticed, all the verbs from the previous slide are followed by the infinitive. What is it again??
an unconjugated/ raw form of the verb
we do not know who is doing the action
in English, the infinitive is preceded by "to"
example : to eat, to drink, to shout, to jump
in Spanish, infinitives end either in... (can you remember??)
AR, ER, IR
5
In English we also use the infinitive after an expression of necessity / obligation :
it is necessary to...
it is compulsory to...
it is forbidden to...
you are allowed to...
you have to...
BUT there is an exception :
one must (does not need "to")
