2

Lesson objectives :

1. Learn how to express the necessity / obligation

2. Revise what an INFINITIVE is

3. Learn different verbs in Spanish

3

There are different ways to express the necessity / obligation in Spanish :

  • Tener que + infinitive : to have to

  • Es obligatorio + infinitive : it is compulsory to

  • Hay que + infinitive : you/ one must

  • (No) se debe + infinitive : you must (not)

  • (No) se permite + infinitive : you are (not) allowed to

  • (No) se puede : you can(not)

  • Está prohibido + infinitive : it is forbidden to

4

As you may have noticed, all the verbs from the previous slide are followed by the infinitive. What is it again??

  • an unconjugated/ raw form of the verb

  • we do not know who is doing the action

  • in English, the infinitive is preceded by "to"

  • example : to eat, to drink, to shout, to jump

  • in Spanish, infinitives end either in... (can you remember??)

  • AR, ER, IR

5

In English we also use the infinitive after an expression of necessity / obligation :

  • it is necessary to...

  • it is compulsory to...

  • it is forbidden to...

  • you are allowed to...

  • you have to...

  • BUT there is an exception :

  • one must (does not need "to")
