Equation Vocabulary

Chapter 3 begins an Algebra unit which you have studied in 6th and 7th grade. It is the foundation for high school math. It is important that you stay engaged and ask questions. The following is vocabulary words you will need t know for this chapter.

Expression

A math sentence with a number, variable or a combination of numbers and variables. There is NO equal sign.

Examples: 

 3x

4p + 8

-2x -3 + 9h

Equation

A math sentence where 2 mathematical expressions are equal.

Example: 5x + 9 = 24

-6y + 12 = y - 18

Variable  Coefficient  Constant

Variable-a letter that represents a 

number example m, n, x…

Coefficient - a number in front of a letter.

  Example: 3x

Constant- a number by itself

For example 4d + 8  8 is a constant
