1

The Cell

Students will be able to identify cell parts based on visuals and definitions. Students will be able to identify the purpose of each of the segments of the cell cycle by matching the definition to the segment.

2

Multiple Choice

As humans grow their cells

1

Get bigger

2

divide and create more of themselves

3

Multiple Select

In the cell cycle, what is supposed to happen when a cell's duplicated DNA has an error? (select all)

1

The cell fixes the error

2

It turns into cancer

3

The cell dies through Apoptosis

4

After the cell divides the immune system kills it

4

Poll

How big is a human cell?

The size 1 grain of sand (60um = .002in)

The size of a raindrop (500um = .02in)

The width of a grain of rice (1900um = .07in)

The thickness of a strand of hair (100um = .003in)

6

What is a cell?

  • Smallest structural and functional unit of a living organism (the smallest you can get and still be considered living)

  • It is made up of carbohydrates, lipids (fats) and proteins

  • Plants, Animals, and Bacteria have different cell types based on their needs

7

What's inside of the cell? Organelles!

  • An organelle is a tiny cellular structure that performs specific functions within a cell.

  • For example your heart is an ORGAN that has a specific function inside of your body

  • Your heart is made out of cells. Those cells have smaller parts that make the cell work. Those are called Organelles (small organs)

8

Multiple Select

What are some organelles we have discussed in this class? (select all that apply)

1

Mitochondira

2

Chloroplast

3

Lysosomes

4

Nucleus

9

Multiple Select

Select the two types of protective barriers around a cell

1

Cell Shield

2

Cell membrane

3

Cell protector

4

Cell wall

10

What protects the cell?

  • Cell wall - Found in plants, fungi, bacteria

  • Cell membrane - Found in all living things.

Slide image

11

Cell Membrane

  • Allow for transportation of things in and out of the cell.

  • Water, food, nutrients, enzymes, proteins

  • It decides what gets in an out.

  • Semi-permeable - water can flow in and out, but glucose must be allowed in.

12

Multiple Choice

All cells have

1

Cell membrane

2

Cell wall

13

Mitochondria

  • Generate chemical energy through the conversion of  glucose (sugar) into ATP (energy) through a process called cellular respiration.

  • "The powerhouse of the cell"

Slide image

14

Chloroplast

  • What makes plants green

  • Where photosynthesis happens

  • Sunlight is captured by the sun, combined with water and carbon dioxide and creates glucose which can be used by the cell and other living things for energy.

15

Multiple Choice

Which is found in plants only?

1

Mitochondria

2

Chloroplast

16

Nucleus

  • The control center of the cell.

  • Contains the DNA (genetic code)

  • 1 per cell

  • Eukaryotes have it. Prokaryotes don't.

Slide image

17

Ribosomes

  • The place of Protein synthesis (creation)

  • Reads the cells DNA (mRNA) to make proteins

  • Proteins are what run our bodies.

  • Found in all living things

Slide image

18

Endoplasmic reticulum

  • Surrounds the nucleus

  • Has ribosomes attached to it (rough ER)

  • Produces proteins and other substances for the cell.

19

Multiple Choice

Which of the following organism does NOT have a nucleus?

1

Monkey

2

Protist

3

Fish

4

Bacteria

20

Centriole

  • Found in animal cells but not plant cells

  • Used in animal cells during cell division

  • They release long stiff fibers called microtubules that split the cell apart during cell division.

Slide image

21

Vacuole

  • Used for storage, and maintaining the shape of the cell.

  • In plants, they are large and help to maintain water balance.

  • In animal cells they are small and hold waste products

Slide image

22

Cytoplasm

  • Gel like substance inside of the cell which surrounds all of the organelles.

  • Proteins are created here.

  • First phase of cellular respiration happens here
