Lesson 1

K. Bennaugh

5 SLIDES only.

Get your camera ready.

Pencils and paper are a plus.

Calculators welcome.

3

We reviewed 3 TYPES of Patterns

1) Arithmetic.

2) Geometric.

3) Recursive.

4

Arithmetic Patterns/Sequences

  • Have common difference between terms.

  • Example Sequence: 140, 70, 0, -70, -140

  • Common Difference: 70

  • Extend the Pattern: .......-210, -280, -350.

5

Geometric Patterns Sequences

  • Terms maintain a common ratio between all terms.

  • Example: 6.25, 12.5, 25, 50..............

  • In this sequence, each of the terms is 1/2 more than its preceding term.

  • You WILL have to mutlipy or divide to complete this type of sequence.

  • EXTEND the PATTERN................100, 200, 400

6

Recursive Sequences

  • In a recursive sequence, you may have to complete up to four operations. (+,-,/,x)

  • n is used to describe the term number.

  • In this sequence: 13.6, 15.1, 16.5....... n1 = 13.6, n2 = 15.1, n3 = 16.5

  • A recursive rule is written as follows:

  • a(n) = a (n-1)+1.5

7

Practice:

Which sequence is arithmetic(common difference)/ geometric(common ratio)?

  • 21, 43, 38, 59.............

  • 0,1,2,3,4,5,6.................

8

Which recursive rule fits the sequence?

  • 5,16,49,148....................

  • A) a(n) = a(n-1) +6.4

  • B) a(n-1) = 3a+1 a(n)

  • What would be the next number in the pattern?
