ALLITERATION

  • Repeating the first letter of words in a sentence

  • Think of a tongue twister

ALLUSION

  • Referring to things outside of the story

  • Using popular people, places, events, that the majority of people would be able to understand or recognize

IMAGERY

  • Words create an picture in your mind

  • Using the five senses (sight, sound, touch, taste, smell) to describe something

HYPERBOLE

  • Using extreme exaggeration in describing something

  • Going above what is needed when explaining and idea

METAPHOR

  • Saying one thing IS something else (but you do not use like or as to compare those two things).

Oxymoron

  • Two opposite ideas that are pushed together into one thought

  • Jumbo shrimp (jumbo means big and shrimp usually means small)

PERSONFICATION

  • giving human qualities to non-human things

Simile

  • Comparing two things using like or as in your comparison

Theme

  • The overall message or idea of a story - what you are supposed to learn

  • Has to be a full sentence

Big Ideas

  • These are the small key words that represent the story (and should not be confused with theme)

  • Think about "The Lion King". Big ideas there are: family; revenge; making peace; pride (but these aren't themes)

PROTAGONIST

  • The character in a story that drives forward the plot

  • The character in a story that is in direct or indirect conflict with the protagonist
