Learning Outcomes

  • To know that for combustion to take place heat, fuel and oxygen is needed

  • To know that combustion is a chemical reaction

3

Combustion

Combustion means burning. Three are 3 things which are needed for burning to take place. They are:- heat, fuel and oxygen

Combustion is a chemical reaction. This means new products are made and the reaction is irreversible.

4

Multiple Select

Which 3 things are needed for a combustion reaction?

1

fuel

2

carbon dioxide

3

heat

4

oxygen

5

Fill in the Blank

Combustion is a ............... reaction

6

Multiple Choice

Name the gas which is needed for a combustion reaction?

1

oxygen

2

hydrogen

3

carbon dioxide

4

air

7

Coal is a fuel

  • This can be summarised :-

  • hydrocarbon + oxygen ➡️ carbon dioxide + water

  • The reactants are found on the left hand side of the equation

  • The reactants are hydrocarbon and oxygen

  • The products are found on the right hand side

  • The products of combustion are carbon dioxide and water

Fossil Fuels

Coal, oil and gas are called fossil fuels. These fuels are non-renewable. This means they will run out. Fuels store chemical energy. When the fuel is burnt lots of thermal energy and some light energy is transferred to the surroundings.

Methane is used in gas cookers and bunsen burners. Methane is a hydrocarbon. Hydrocarbons are made up of hydrogen and carbon particles only.

12

Multiple Select

Choose 3 answers "Methane is a......"

1

fossil fuel

2

hydrocarbon

3

gas

4

liquid

13

Testing for carbon dioxide

  • When a fuel is burnt, carbon dioxide is produced

  • This gas can be bubbled into limewater

  • Carbon dioxide causes limewater to turn cloudy

14

Multiple Select

What chemical is used to test for carbon dioxide?

1

limewater

2

acid

3

water

4

petrol

15

When carbon dioxide gas is put into limewater it turns cloudy or milky.
