What is a TOPIC?
1 to 3 words that describe the text.
Usually found in the Title or Subtitle.
Gives a general, broad idea.

What is the MAIN IDEA?
A statement that tells us the most important point of the text.
This can be written in a 1 sentence summary.

Sometimes, the author will directly state the Main Idea in a sentence. This is called the TOPIC SENTENCE

Other times, the author will not directly state the Main Idea. This means the reader has to use the supporting details and facts to infer the main idea. This is called IMPLIED MAIN IDEA.

The SUPPORTING DETAILS in a text are facts, examples, and details that support or help describe the main idea.
