65

The favourable conditions for the formation of delta

  • 1. The river must carry a large amount of sediment [ e.g. â€“Deforestation upstream; –Erosion in upper course produces more load; –Absence of lakes along the river course]

  • 2. The sea must have a small tidal range and weak currents which favour deposition. [i.e. weak wave erosion, eg. gentle offshore gradient, shallow coastal water]

66

The favourable conditions for the formation of delta

  • 3. The rate of deposition is faster than the rate of removal of deposits [ i.e. erosion] [deposition will be easier with the presence of mangrove and with gentler gradient]

  • 4. The sea must be calm at the mouth of the river and is sheltered.
