Slide image

2

Last week in unit 8 we discussed controlled R vowels

This week we will be diving deeper into how to mark the words for your upcoming spelling test.

3

Let's mark the word : dirty

4

The word dirty has two syllables. One R controlled vowel and a Y that makes an E sound.

Dirty

dirt is a word (noun) so you underline it

ir : is the controlled r vowel

and y makes the long e sound

also circle y because it is a suffix (made a noun an adjective)

Let's mark the word : chapter

6

The word chapter has 2 syllables. One is closed. One syllable has a controlled r vowel. The a is short

Chapter

do not get the 'er' syllable confused for a closed syllabe. Mark it as an R contolled vowel sound.

Let's mark the word : sturdy

8

The word sturdy has two syllables. One is R controlled and the other is open with Y that sounds like a long e.

Sturdy

you don't circle the y is because it is NOT standing alone. it is along side of d. making it an open syllable. y in this case is NOT a suffix.

Let's mark the word : corner

10

The word corner has 2 syllables. Both are R controlled

Corner

The reason 'corn' isn't underlined and the 'er' isn't a suffix is because this is not a noun turning into an verb. But it is two controlled r vowel- syllables.

Let's mark the word : termite

12

The word termite has 2 syllables. One is controlled R and the other is Vowel consonant E.

Termite

The i is long. It says it's name because of the e at the end of the word.

The e is crossed out because it is silent.
