Please note: It is possible to address someone by his or her first name, and still need to speak in the "formal" register. Consider the following

  • You're speaking with your boss: Nina, wait a moment, please.

  • You're speaking to your "adult" neighbor: Have a good day, Anna.

  • You're speaking to your best friend's parents: Have fun at dinner.

  • You're speaking to your aunts and uncles: Sit down, make yourselves comfortable.

15

Observe these examples of "mandatos con usted y ustedes":

  • Sra. Roma, hable con el profesor ahora.

  • Apague usted las luces, por favor,

  • Doctor, póngale la inyección a la paciente en el cuarto B.

  • Sr. García, vaya a la biblioteca a las siete.

16

Are there any assumptions you can make regarding the formation of usted and ustedes commands?

17

The usted and ustedes commands, like the negative commands, are formed by

  • dropping the "o" in the yo form

  • and adding opposite usted and ustedes endings.

  • For -ar verbs, add -e or -en

  • For -er and -ir verbs, add -a or -an

18

The YO form is the key to success!

Conjugating the verb correctly in the "yo" form is the most necessary step!

  • Señorita Laura, sígame.

  • Roberto y Elena, pongan los platos en la mesa. Pónganlos en la mesa.

Usted and ustedes can be used with the command forms to strike an even more formal

tone. In such instances they follow the command form.
