There are 4 main types of sentences

  • Statements

  • Questions

  • Commands

  • Exclamations

Statement sentences

  • They give information.

  • End with a full stop

  • For example; My name is Tom.

  • Can you think of other examples?

Question sentences

  • Normally start with the question words; what, why, who, where, when, how.

  • They end with a question mark.

  • Normally require a response.

  • For example; Why are you here?

Exclamation sentences

  • Normally end with an exclamation.

  • They show strong feelings of awe, admiration, surprise, excitement & anger.

  • For example; How wonderful!

  • Can you think of other examples?

Command sentences

  • They are used to give instructions.

  • Normally end with exclamations at the end

  • They are also called imperative sentences.

  • For example; Sit down!
