What are acids?

  • Acids are substances that contain hydrogen atoms and release hydrogen ions (H+) when dissolved in water.

  • They have the following properties: 1) turn blue litmus paper to red, taste sour and react with metals to form hydrogen gas.

  • The following are some known acids and their uses:

  • Hydrochloric acid - used to digest food in the stomach

  • Nitric acid - used to make fertilizers for plants.

  • Sulfuric acid - used in making car batteries

  • Citric acid - found in citrus fruits such as lemon, lime and oranges.
