Mountain Landscapes
17
Mountain landscapes and landforms
Mountain landscapes are formed by the movement of tectonic plates, which creates pressure between the two plates and pushes the earths crust against each other to create mountains
Landforms within this environment:
Mountain – a large mass of earth that has been significantly elevated on the Earth’s surface. Ridge – a long, narrow, elevated surface. Valley – a low area, normally surrounded by mountains.

Landforms in this environment: Flood plain – a low-lying area regularly flooded by a river. Riverbed – the channel in which the river flows. Billabong – an branch of a river forming a pool, however, only meets with the river when flooding occurs.

Coastal Landscapes
25
Coastal landscapes and landforms
Coastal landscapes are shaped by Aeolian processes (erosion and transportation of sediment). These forces create bays, beaches and cliffs, to name a few.
Landforms in this environment: Beach - a shore normally sandy or made up of pebbles. Headland - an outcrop of land that is elevated above the sea.
26
Desert Landscapes
27
Desert landscapes and landforms
For a landscapes to be classified as a desert, it needs to receive less that 250mm of rain annually. Therefore, there can be hot deserts, such as the Sahara, and cold deserts, such as Antarctica, as both areas meet this requirement.
Landforms in this environment: Oasis – a supply of groundwater in the desert, normally surrounded by vegetation. Grassland plains – a large, normally flat area that is covered in a variety of grasses.
28
Tropical Rainforest Landscapes
29
Tropical rainforest landscapes and landforms
Normally found along the equator, tropical rainforests are made up of a large number of plant and animal species that thrive in hot, humid and extremely wet environments. These landscapes are very productive in reproducing species as a result of similar conditions all year round.
Landforms in this environment: Mountain - a large mass of earth that has been significantly elevated on the Earth’s surface. Valley - a low area surrounded by mountains.
30
Built Landscapes
31
Built landscapes and landforms
