A poet laureate is a poet officially appointed by a government or conferring institution, typically expected to compose poems for special events and occasions.

Rhyme

• Words that sound the same

• used to emphasize words or ideas

• rhyming words do not have to be spelled the same, but have to sound the same

Rhyme Scheme

• a way to label poems

• when writing a poem, you may want to be consistent; deciding rhyme scheme will help give you guidelines to follow

• Helpful when writing song lyrics or raps

Free Verse & Spoken Word

• Does not follow any specific rules

• Uses literary elements such as repetition, rhyme, metaphor/simile, symbolism, or sensory details to emphasize words or ideas

• Meant to say something specific to the audience; has a purpose

• A creative way to use language

• Often a commentary on injustices in society (the way those with mental illnesses are treated, beauty standards, etc.)

• A collection of your revised poems

• Will have a cover page, table of contents, numbered pages, and an About the Author page.

• Can look however you want it to look; get creative!

• You may want to focus on one specific theme for all of your poems.

• It would be a good idea to re-watch directions in Google Classroom

• Looking up examples of each style of poetry can help give you inspiration

• Find a quiet, peaceful place to revise your poetry; you may want to re-write your poems all together.
