Multiple Choice

What is a pronoun?

• a person, place, or thing

Personal and Possessive Pronouns

• Personal pronouns stand in for the name of a person, group, or thing (I/me, it, he/him, she/her, they, we, us, you)

• Possessive pronouns show that something belongs to someone (my/mine, its, his, her/hers, their/theirs, our/ours, your/yours)

I was standing with my mother in me bedroom, with one of our family suitcases on the bed. (What is the error?)

Subjects and objects

• The subject = the person, place, or thing that the sentence is talking about (the noun doing the main verb)

• The object = the person, place, or thing the main verb is happening to

• "I threw the ball." (The subject is "I," and the object is "the ball")

• "She is at the park." (The subject is "she," and the object is "the park")

• Pronouns acting as the subject are in the subjective case

• Pronouns acting as the object are in the objective case

Subjective and Objective Case Pronouns

• Subjective case/subject pronouns (I, she, he, they, it, we, you)

• Objective case/object pronouns (me, her, him, them, it, us, you)

Following the verb be

• be (is/are, was/were, or be) is like an equals sign (=)

• It was I who broke window. --> It = I ("I broke the window", not "Me broke he window.")

• It is they who are responsible. --> It = they ( "They are responsible," not "Them are responsible.")

• After a "be" verb, use the subject version of the pronoun (I, she, he, they, it, we, you)

In incomplete clauses

• "Caden swims faster than I (swim)." (NOT "Caden swims faster than me (swim).")

• In comparative sentences, finish the sentence to check that you are using the right pronoun.

• For comparative sentences, you should be using a subject pronoun (I, she, he, they, it, we, you)

In compound objects

• "Mom gave advice to Claire and me." (NOT "Mom gave advice to Claire and I.")

• When there is a compound object (or subject), take out the first part of the subject to see what the second part should be.

• "Mom gave advice to me" makes way more sense than "Mom gave advice to I."

Indefinite Pronouns

• Indefinite pronouns stand in for broad things (not a specific person, group, or thing)

• For instance: "Nothing," "something," "anything," "none," "all," "some," "both," "one"

• We need to be careful that we are using the right type of verb (singular or plural) with each indefinite pronoun
