In English, words that end with the j sound are spelled with one of two letter patterns: dge or ge.

When the j sound directly follows a short vowel in a one-syllable word, it is spelled dge, as in

fudge. Otherwise, it is spelled with the letters ge, as in engage.

For example, the word chronology comes from Kronos, the god of time, who represented the

changing of time. Kronos gave us such words as synchronize (“to cause things to occur at the

same time”) and chronometer (“a device for telling precise time”).
