In English, words that end with the j sound are spelled with one of two letter patterns: dge or ge.
When the j sound directly follows a short vowel in a one-syllable word, it is spelled dge, as in
fudge. Otherwise, it is spelled with the letters ge, as in engage.

The yoo sound is usually spelled in one of these four ways:

Etymology: Greek Names

same time”) and chronometer (“a device for telling precise time”).
