WH- questions (Question Words)

• There are two main types of questions: Yes/No questions and WH- question. WH-questions are questions starting with WH-words including: what, when, where, who, whom, which, whose, why and how.

• Question words are used to ask about specific qualities, times, places, people and so on.

Where: used to ask about places

Who: used to ask about people ( subject)

Whom: used to ask about people (object of verb)

Which: used to ask about choices

Why: used to ask about reasons/ causes

How: used to ask about manner/ process

I. How to form WH-questions?

You can use the following word order for a question-word question:

[Wh-question word] + "am," "is," or "are" + [subject] + [ verbing]+ rest of the sentence + ?

Examples :

1. Which car are you buying this week?

2. Why is she bleeding?

3. Who am I sending to the meeting?

4. Why is Caroline looking for the latest brochure?

5. Where are Dan and Billy fishing?
