The part of speech indicates how a word functions in a sentence.

As you saw on the first slide, there are a total of nine parts of speech!

By now, you should be familiar with the following six parts of speech...

Noun: a person, place, thing or idea

Verb: an action word

Adjective: a word that describes a noun

Pronoun: a shorter word that substitutes a noun

Article: a word that comes before a noun (a/an/the)

Interjection: a word that shows excitement or emotion
