Multiple Choice

What does C.E.R. stand for?

1

Citation, Evidence, Response

2

Creature, Empire, Rodent

3

Claim, Evidence, Reasoning

3

What is it?

  • When you write about what you read, you need to use EVIDENCE (examples from the text) to support your answer.

  • This strategy will help organize your ideas and evidence.

4

Example

Money has been valued over human lives for centuries. This is seen when Reynolds emphasizes that "Enslavers weren't interested in hearing anything about converting their slaves. Saving their crops each year was more important to them than saving souls. It was harvest over humanity" (Reynolds 19). This evidence shows that the idea of slaveholders wanted their money more than they wanted to treat African people like human beings, which is something that did not stop once slavery was "ended".

5

Overview

  • Write a CLAIM = Answer the question or state your idea/opinion

  • Use EVIDENCE from the text. Evidence = quotes or ideas from the book.

  • Add REASONING to explain your ideas and how they connect to the evidence.

6

Claim - If there's a question to answer

  • Always answer fully and restate the question in your answer.

  • Your reader should not have to see the question to know what you are writing about.

  • Example Question: Why did the chicken cross the road?
