Read about how Professional Conversion Programme helped Mr John Chew adapt to his new job after he was retrenched.
In June 2019, Mr John Chew, who worked as an engineer in an MNC in the oil and gas sector, received news that he would be retrenched because his company decided to move to a cheaper country.
Losing his job at 55 was not the easiest news for Mr Chew to accept. His wife is now the main income provider and they have to cut down on non-essential activities, such as eating out and going overseas holidays. Instead of becoming frustrated and upset, Mr Chew decided to think positively and be open to different job opportunities.
23
A few months into his job search, he came across a job opening in the electronics sector. Mr Chew applied for it even though he do not have the relevant qualifications or work experience.
During the interview, the company saw that he is willing to learn and adapt and decided to hire him as their electronics engineer.
However, to take on his new role, Mr Chew needs to undergo training to pick up new skills. His new employer decided to use the Workforce Singapore's Professional Conversion Programme, which provided Mr Chew with structured classroom training and on-the-job training that allowed him to learn the new skills in a short period of time.
