Weather

Hey, Bill Nye here. Today we are going to go over different weather instruments, what they do, and how they can help you analyze current and predict upcoming weather patterns.

Slide image

3

Thermometer

We started class with the easy instrument, and we'll start the review with it too. A thermometer measures the air temperature.

Slide image

5

Thermometers

Using a thermometer and knowing the temperature is really important. For example, where I am it's 65 degrees today. That means when precipitation falls, it falls as rain. Where you are right now, it's below 32 degrees a large part of the day so precipitation would fall as snow or sleet.

6

Barometer

A Barometer meaures air pressure.

Slide image

7

8

Barometer

A Barometer has 2 readings, High Pressure, and Low Pressure. When there is a High Pressure, you have a clear, cool, sunny day like I'm having now. Just remember the trick, High Pressure starts with H, and Happy Days (clear, cool, sunny day ) starts with H too.

9

Barometer

Conversely, when the Barometer reads Low, you have a Lousy day. It's rainy, and stormy! Just think Low Pressure starts with L, and Lousy weather ( rainy, and stormy) starts with L too!

11

Rain Gauge

OK, kids, that last one has a lot of information. Let's get another easy one out of the way. The Rain Gauge. It measures how much rain has fallen over a specific amount of time. (Usually per 24 hour period)

Slide image

12

Rain Gauge

It's important to keep track of how much it has rained so you can look for trends. You can tell when there is a drought (not much rain over a long period of time) or when the ground is over-saturated due to too much rain.

Wind Vane/Weather Vane

This instrument is pretty easy. It measures wind direction.

Slide image

14

Anemometer

Due to the uneven heating of the Earth's surface, we have winds. Some are light and some very strong. We need an instrument that can measure wind speed for us and that is the Anemometer.

15

Anemometer

The cups attached to the anemometer catch the wind as it goes by. The harder the winds blow, the faster the anemometer turns. Obviously the wind is very light here,

17

Hygrometer

Kids, the Hygrometer is pretty impoartant. It measures humidity (how much moisture is in the air). Hey, another trick to help remember. Hygrometer and Humidity start with an H.

Slide image

18

Hygrometer

A hygrometer is an instrument used to measure the amount of water vapor in the air. Some even measure the water vapor in soil, or in confined spaces. Lower than 30% of humidity is dry, and 30% to 60% is considered comfortable. However, the temperature should be between 68F to 79F. Humidity that is higher than 60% will indicate the area is wet.

Weather Maps

Last are Weather Maps. They indicate atmospheric conditions above a large portion of the Earth's surface. Meteorologists use weather maps to forecast the weather.
