Sentence Pattern (S-V-DO)

  • In the predicate part of a simple sentence, the most important word is the verb

  • If the verb is transitive, it will have objects. A noun or pronoun that directly receives the action of the verb is called the direct object (DO).

  • Example: The teacher told a story.

  • Example: Cecilia gave cookies.

  • A noun or pronoun that indirectly receives the action of the verb is called the indirect object (IO)

  • It tells to whom or for whom the action is done. In sentences with both an indirect object and a direct object, the indirect object always comes before the direct object.

  • Example: The teacher told the kids a story
