Overview

  • Played on a rectangular-shaped court, which can be one of many surfaces.

  • Played with two players (singles match), or four players (doubles match)

  • Players stand on opposite sides of the net and use a stringed racquet to hit the ball back and forth to each other.

Gameplay

  • Each player or team has a maximum of one bounce after the ball has been hit by their opponent to return the ball over the net and within the boundaries of the court.

  • When a player then fails to return the ball into the correct court, the opponent wins a point. 

  • Win enough points to win a game, enough games to win a set, and enough sets to win a match.

Starting the Match

  • One player will serve behind the baseline

  • The server must serve the ball over the net, into the opposite, smaller box known as the "service box"

  • 1 point = 15

  • 2 points= 30

  • 3 points= 40

  • 4 points = game (must be 2 points ahead)

What is a Deuce?

  • The score is 40-40

Switching Ends

  • Players or teams switch ends of the court on odd games

  • This means that after the first game is complete, they switch sides

  • Tiebreak Set

Advantage Set

  • A player or team needs to win six games, by two, to win the set.

  • This means that there is no tiebreak game played at 6-6.

  • The set continues until one player/team wins by two games.

Tiebreak Set

  • A player or team needs to win six games wins a set.

  • If the score gets to 5-5 (5-all), one player must win the next two games to win the set.

  • If the score reaches 6-6 (6-all) in the set, a tiebreak game is played.

  • Sets tied at 6-6

  • Each player takes turns serving

  • First player to 7 points and 2 points ahead, wins!

Grand Slam Matches

  • Beginning in 2019, each of the four Grand Slams showcase the different ways to win a final set. 

  • Australian Open: Final set. First to 10 points, tiebreak at 6-6

  • French Open: Final set. Advantage set, with no tiebreak

  • Wimbledon: Final set. First to 7 points, tiebreak at 12-12

  • US Open: Final set. First to 7 points, tiebreak at 6-6

Unforced Errors

  • Hitting the ball outside of play

  • Hitting the ball into net and onto your side of the court

  • Hitting the ball twice in succession

  • Touching the net with your body or racquet

  • Touching the ball with anything except the racquet

  • Double Fault
