Photosynthesis and Respiration

2 Sides of the Same Coin
Both Processes require a source of energy
What is the source of energy for photosynthesis?
What is the source of energy for Respiration?
3
Open Ended
Let's say you are starving, is there anything you can do to gain energy without eating, drinking, or using stored energy? What organism if any can?
4
In addition to plants, some protists such as algae and bacteria can undergo photosynthesis
5
Open Ended
So what is Photosynthesis?
6
Photosynthesis
Photosynthesis is the process plants use to make their own “food” from the sun's energy, carbon dioxide, and water.
During photosynthesis, carbon dioxide and water combine with solar energy to create glucose, a carbohydrate (C6H12O6), and oxygen.
in the presence of sunlight, carbon dioxide + water → glucose + oxygen.
7
Food for Thought
Can any organisms eat food that didn't at some point get its energy from an autotroph/ photosynthetic organism?
It's not always sunny, what do plants do then?
8

What reactants do plants need to complete the photosynthesis reaction?
Carbon Dioxide
Oxygen
Water
Soil
11
Multiple Choice
Plants can't start the photosynthesis reaction without what energy source?
Glucose
ATP
Light Energy
Oxygen
12

Chlorophyll
13
Multiple Select
The products of photosynthesis include?
Glucose
Water
Carbon Dioxide
Oxygen
14
Respiration is Photosynthesis Backwards?
How plants produce energy without the light
How Heterotrophs obtain energy
15
Cellular Respiration
Through the process of cellular respiration, the energy in food is changed into energy that can be used by the body's cells.
The sugars in the food you eat are digested into the simple sugar glucose, a monosaccharide.
During cellular respiration, glucose and oxygen are converted into carbon dioxide and water, and the energy is transferred to ATP.
glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water
16
What is ATP
During cellular respiration, the energy stored in glucose is transferred to ATP
ATP, or adenosine triphosphate, is chemical energy the cell can use. It is the molecule that provides energy for your cells to perform work.
Examples of work?
Both Plants and Animals use ATP to do Work
17
Where do these processes happen?
Photosynthesis occurs in the Chloroplasts of plants
Cellular Resperiation occurs in Mitochondria in both humans and plants
18
Summary
1. Plants use sunlight to convert water and carbon dioxide into glucose and oxygen.
2. Plants can store glucose and use it with oxygen to perform cellular respiration to produce water, carbon dioxide, and generate ATP which is used to create energy for actual work.
3. Animals obtain glucose from plants, oxygen from the air, then perform cellular respiration to generate ATP to make energy for actual work. The by products (carbon dioxide and water) are released by the body.
19
Can You Model It?
Think about how you would
