Case Study – PayPal (Source : www.talkfreely.com/blog/internal-communication-case-studies)

Background:

The digital payment company needed to address an internal report that revealed not all their employees were using the PayPal app.

Approach:

The President, David Marcus, wrote a company-wide memo to all staff “If you are one of the folks who refused to install the PayPal app or if you can’t remember your PayPal password, do yourself a favour, go find something that will connect with your heart and mind elsewhere”.

1. What are some suggestions you have for David to manage this differently to influence the employees’ decision?

3

Connecting the disconnected!

New to this organization, your manager had assigned a senior (10 years in this role) to provide on-the-job training to you.

He handed you files of transactions and processes to 'study', instructed you to write down your questions and he will meet with you from 4-5pm everyday to answer your questions for the first month before assigning you any 'real' work.

2 weeks on, you had only meet your senior twice, each time for less than 30 minutes as he arrived late and had to rush off to pick up his wife and child.

1. How will you apply connecting skill to help yourself in this situation?

2. What is your objective / goal from this connection?

4

Selling your proposal - INFLUENCE

Company EP develop a new product that could cut the electric power consumption by 35%. It was clear that this product was the best in the market.

The owner, put together a 150-page proposal to the major potential buyers. He devoted the first 100 pages of the proposal to the mathematical theory and engineering design behind his new product, and the next 30 to descriptions of the new assembly line he planned to set up to produce regulators quickly. Rest of the pages are appendix of test results comparing his products with present models, and a hand drawn graphs showing the potential dollar savings.

Despite having the best product, Company E didn’t get the sales. Six months later, the company filed for bankruptcy.

1. What went wrong?

2. What are some ways the owner could have done differently to get the sales for his product?

Connecting in Project management?

You assigned a high profile, cross-function project to a superstar in your team. She always delivers excellent work with perfect on-time record.

During your weekly review with her, she shared that she is struggling, having difficulties with meeting the schedule as not everyone is up to speed.

You had also received feedback:

(1) It's so hard to speak to her, she was typing away even when we had our one-one project status update.

(2) She only wants to do if it's DONE and if NOT-DONE, when?

(3) She did the work under my name without informing me.

(4) She called me on a Sunday to check if I would meet the Monday deadline!

1. What do you think are her issues?

2. What are some connecting skills that could help her?

6
