2

Fuel Needed

It is often helpful to estimate how many gallons of gasoline will be needed for a trip. Today we are going to figure out how to calculate that. To find out how much fuel is needed for a trip, divide the distance by the mileage rating.

3

Multiple Choice

What are we going to figure out how to do today?

1

find average speed

2

calculate fuel needed

3

calculate mileage

4

find miles traveled

Example 1

Richard is planning a 390-mile trip. His car's EPA rating is 16 mpg (miles per gallon) on the highway. How many gallons of gas will he require for this trip?
To find how much fuel he needs, we are going to divide miles by mpg.
390 miles  ÷\div  16 mpg = 24.375  \approx  24 gallons needed for trip

Example 2

Jake is planning a 150-mile trip. His car's EPA rating is 20 mpg on the highway. How many gallons of gas will he require for this trip?
Same as before we need to divide miles by epa rating.
150  ÷\div  20 = 7.5  \approx  8  gallons

Gas Mileage: Different factors that affect the gas mileage on your car

  • Engine size

  • city vs highway driving

  • the speed at which you drive

  • your personal driving habits, are you a speed racer, do you take off quickly and stop quickly, do you drive super slow all of this contributes to your MPG rating

8

Multiple Select

Which of these factors affect the MPG of the car? Check all that apply

1

The color of the car

2

The speed you drive

3

Your insurance rate

4

City vs highway driving
