Knowing the summation notation of a series can help to determine the first term, common difference, the sum of any amount of terms in the series and any nth term of the series.

N.B. The AP and GP formulas are used depending on the question.

EXAMPLES

​(d) the last term is when r = 10

T₁₀ = 3(10) - 8 = 22 or

T_n = a + (n-1) d

= -5 + (10 - 1) (3)

= 22
