Graphing Dilated Images
Applying Scale Factor
2
Driving Question:
Why do graphic designers, police officers, and architects (you guys!) have to be experts in Geometry?
3
Success Criteria
I will be able to graph enlargement dilations and reduction dilations based on a given scale factor.
For example: Find the new coordinates of (2,-4) if there was a dilation of scale factor = 3.

Time to Explore
Go to the Agenda, and click on the Geogebra link.
Play around for 3 minutes. Be prepared to share some notices and wonderings.
5
Graphing Enlargements
Recall: When a scale factor is larger than 1, we get bigger.
Notice how both the x and y coordinates got bigger by a scale factor of 2.
Talk with your shoulder partner: What would the value of the blue points be if the scale factor were 3? 4? 10?
6
Graphing Enlargements
What are the new coordinates of (3,5) if there is a dilation of scale factor = 4.
You try:
What are the new coordinates of (2,8) with a scale factor = 2.
7
8
Graphing Enlargements
Determine the coordinates of the image after applying the given scale factor. Then graph the new image.
A(1,1), B(1,3), C(3,1) with a dilation of sale factor = 2.
9
10
Graphing Reductions.
Recall: When a scale factor is less than 1, we get smaller.
Notice how both the x and y coordinate got smaller by a scale factor of .5.
Talk with your shoulder partner: what would the value of the blue points be if the scale factor was .25? .75?
11
Graphing Reductions
What are the new coordinates of (3,5) if there is a dilation of scale factor = .5
You try:
What are the new coordinates of (2,8) with a scale factor = .5
12
13
Graphing Reductions
Determine the coordinates of the image after applying the given scale factor. Then graph the new image.
A(1,1), B(1,3), C(3,1) with a dilation of sale factor = .5
