The Solar System

Slide image

2

What will I learn in this lesson?

I will be able to:

-recognize and describe the objects of the Solar System.

-identify Earth's position in the Solar System.

-identify and describe the characteristics of objects in our Solar System.

-differentiate between the objects in our Solar System.

Slide image

3

The Solar System

Our Solar System has many different objects that are all held together by gravity. In the center of our Solar System is our star player, the Sun.

Slide image

4

The Solar System

Our Solar System contains the following:

• One star (the Sun)

• Eight planets

• 566,000 asteroids

• 3,100 comets

• 181 moons

Slide image

5

Moon, Planets, and Other Things

In our galaxy, there are billions of stars. Around each star are objects that orbit or revolve around it. Eight planets orbit the Sun. Some of these planets have moons that orbit or revolve around them. At the edge of the galaxy, giant rocks called asteroids orbit the Sun. You can also find comets, with their bright, colorful tails, orbiting the Sun.

Slide image

6

The Sun

The Sun is an example of a star. A star is a large burning ball of gas. The Sun is the center of our Solar System. All planets, comets, and asteroids orbit, revolve around it.

Slide image

7

Planet

A planet is a large, round body that orbits or revolves around a star. In our Solar System, there are eight planets that orbit, revolve around, the Sun. The Earth, our home planet, is the third planet from the Sun.

Slide image

8

Moon

A moon is a natural object that orbits, revolves around, a planet. A planet can have more than one moon and many do. There are many moons in the Solar System, but the best known example is our Moon, which orbits or revolves around the Earth.

Slide image

9

Asteroid

An asteroid is a rocky or metallic object that orbits, revolves around, the Sun and is much smaller than a planet. There are many asteroids in the Solar System, with most of them found in one of two asteroid belts that orbit, revolve around the Sun.

Slide image

10

Comet

Comets are made mostly of ice, gas, rock, and dust. A comet orbits, revolves around, the Sun.

Did you know: Shooting stars are small pieces of dust or rock?

If you ever get to see a shooting star, they are pretty spectacular to watch! Shooting stars are actually tiny pieces of rock or dust that start to burn as they enter into Earth's atmosphere.

Slide image

21

Shooting Stars

A shooting star is a small piece of rock that has broken off of an asteroid. As it gets pulled into Earth's atmosphere, it starts to burn up causing a brief streak of light. Shooting stars are called meteors.

22

The Earth's Position

Sometimes things have a specific order. There is a specific order in the Solar System. The eight planets that orbit around the Sun have a particular order in terms of how far they are from the Sun.

Slide image

23

The Order of the Planets

Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun, and Neptune is the farthest planet from the Sun.

Which planets are in between Mercury and Neptune?

Let's explore to find out the order of the planets in our Solar System.

Slide image

24

Mercury

Mercury is the first planet from the Sun, which makes it the closest planet to the Sun.

Slide image

25

Venus

Venus is the second planet from the Sun.

Slide image

26

Earth

Earth is the third planet from the Sun.

Slide image

27

Mars

Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun.

Slide image

28

Jupiter

Jupiter is the fifth planet from the Sun.

Slide image

29

Saturn

Saturn is the sixth planet from the Sun.

Slide image

30

Uranus

Uranus is the seventh planet from the Sun.

Slide image

31

Neptune

Neptune is the eighth planet from the Sun, which makes it the farthest planet from the Sun.

Slide image

32

You can see some planets in the night sky from Earth.

On some nights, you can see the planets Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn without a telescope. In this picture, the brightest object in the night sky is Venus. If you look to the left, you will see Jupiter, which is slightly less bright than Venus. Jupiter is the biggest planet in our Solar System.

Slide image

33

The Right Order

A mnemonic device is a phrase where the first letter in each of the words is the same as the first letter of each word you are trying to remember. This mnemonic device can help you remember the correct order of the planets. My (Mercury) Very (Venus) Energetic (Earth) Mother (Mars) Just (Jupiter) Served (Saturn) Us (Uranus) Nachos (Neptune).

34

Write Like a Scientist- Optional

In your Science Notebook, create a drawing of the Solar System that includes the Sun and all eight planets. Draw the planets in order from closest to farthest from the Sun.

Slide image

35

Enrichment- Optional

Are you the type of student who likes a challenge? If so, then this activity is for you! In this activity, you will create a model of our Solar System showing the correct order of the planets starting at the Sun. Use the image of the model to help guide you.

36

Discovering the Characteristics

Our Solar System is home to a sun, planets, moons, asteroids, and comets. Each of these have different characteristics. You may already be familiar with the characteristics of some of these. For example, we know that the Sun is a giant fiery ball of gas and that the Earth is made mostly of solid and molten rock.

Lesson Summary

In this lesson, you learned about the characteristics of objects in our Solar System. Our Solar System is made up of moons, planets, asteroids, comets, and the Sun, which is a star. Planets, asteroids, and comets orbit the Sun, while moons orbit the planets.

Slide image

57

Lesson Summary

The planets are in a specific order in terms of their distance from the Sun. Out of the eight planets in our Solar System, Earth is the third planet from the Sun. Each object in the Solar System has unique characteristics that help us to identify it. Learning about an object's characteristics helps to better understand its role in our solar system.
