Purgatory
According to Roman Catholic belief, purgatory is a place where unconfessed sinners experience indescribable remorse. as their sins are burnt and purged away before they can gain entry into heaven. What we need to remember is that the majority of Shakespeare's audience was Protestant due to the Reformation. They would see the ghost as a bad sign because the Protestat Church abolished the belief in purgatory and they judged revenge as a sin for which the revenger's sole would be damned.

Greek Mythological allusion
Lethe was a river in the Underworld. When someone died, they had to cross this river and its water made them forget about their past life.
