2

Rate

  • A rate shows a relationship between two different measurements

  • One way to find rate is with "miles" and "hours"

3

Rate

  • The car went 30 miles per hour

  • This tells us that the car's rate is 30 miles each hour

  • In other words, the car was able to drive 30 miles in each hour

  • The words "miles per hour" mean "miles in each hour"

4

Example 1

  • Johnny drove the car 45 miles per hour. How many miles did he drive in 2 hours?

  • Pattern: Number in each time group x Number of time groups = total

  • Problem: 45 miles per hour x 2 hours= 90 miles

  • Johnny drove 90 miles in 2 hours!

5

There are other reasons to find the rate

You will calculate rate when you have a job to figure out how much money should be in your paycheck

6

Rate

  • Gilbert earns $10 each week doing chores. How much money does he earn for doing 8 weeks of chores?

  • Pattern: Number of groups x Number in each group = total

  • 8 weeks x $10 per week = $80

  • Gilbert earns $80 for doing 8 weeks of chores
