Today we are going to look at how we use the phonograms 'ic' and 'ick'. The both give the same sound. Can you say the sound?

3

When we are spelling words with these phonograms, there are rules to follow. These rules will help us with our spelling.

4

Rule #1

If a word ends with 'ic' sound, and has one syllable, the spelling that is used is 'ick'.

5

For example: trick, pick, lick

6

Can you think of any?

7

Rule #2

If a word ends with 'ic' sound and has more than one syllable, then the spelling that is used is 'ic'.

8

For example: clinic, sarcastic, panic.

Can you think of anymore?

9

Of course there are exceptions to the rules. If the word is a compound word and can be separated into 2 words, then the end spelling is 'ick'.

10

For example: candlestick, seasick

Can you think of anymore?
