Three Multiplication Properties

• Commutative Property of Multiplication

• Associative Property of Multiplication

• Distributive Property

Commutative Property

Two factors can be multiplied in any order and the product (answer) will be the same.

Using the Commutative Property...

• 2 x 8 = 8 x 2

• 25 x 100 = 100 x 25

• 2.5 x 0.1 = 0.1 x 2.5

Associative Property

Three or more factors that are multiplied can be grouped in any way and the product (answer) will be the same.

Using the Associative Property...

• (3 x 2) x 2 = 3 x (2 x 2)

• 6 x 2 = 3 x 4

• (40 x 0.1) x 3 = 40 x (0.1 x 3)

• 4 x 3 = 40 x 0.3

Distributive Property

Multiplying a number by a sum (addition equation) is the same as multiplying the number by each addend and then adding the products.

Using the Distributive Property...

• (4 x 2) + (4 x 5) = 4 x (2 + 5)

• (2.1 x 100) + (2.1 x 50) = 2.1 x (100 + 50)
