Astronomy

  • Astronomy is the study of the universe.

  • Universe is everything that exists; Ex: Earth, planets, stars, and all of space

  • Telescope is a device that collects light and magnifies images to make distant objects appear closer, larger, and brighter.

3

2 types of telescopes

  • Refracting: uses lenses to gather light from a faraway object and magnify its image. the light is bent

  • Reflecting: visible light reflects off a series of two or more mirror, which amplify the image before it reaches lenses in the eyepiece

  • MOST telescopes are reflecting cause its easier to build large mirrors.

7

Visible and Invisible Light

This is the electromagnetic spectrum. You can see how the wave lengths change.

The Earth Rotates?

Of course it does!! The Earth spins on it imaginary axis that runs from the NORTH to the SOUTH pole. One whole rotation takes 24 hours, or one day.

9

The Foucault Pendulum

  • In the 1850's a French Scientist, Jean Foucault made the suspended pendulum that proved the Earth was really rotating.

  • We use satellites to show this today and directly observe Earth's rotation.

10

Time Zones

There are 24 time zones on Earth! One for every hour of the day. When you cross the International Date Line to the West, you are one day later than it is in places east of the line.

11

Time Zones

  • Standard Time zones is a vertical belt in which all locations have the same time.

  • Even in the US, there are thought to be 4 time zones, but Hawaii and Alaska have their own zone too.

What Makes a Year

  • We have seasons because of the tilt of the Earth on its axis

  • It takes 365 days for one revolution around the Sun.

  • When the Northern Hemisphere is tilted more toward the Sun, it's Summer here. Well, it is Winter in the Southern Hemisphere.

  • When the Northern Hemisphere is tilted away from the Sun, it's Winter. Well, it is Summer in the Southern Hemisphere.

  • While we celebrate NEW YEARS in the cold, it is Summer in Australia!!

17

Let's Explore Space

  • Artificial satellites can transmit data back to Earth with speed and accuracy.

  • Space Probes can travel beyond Earth and use onboard instruments to study various objects in the solar system.

  • Space shuttles are reusable spacecraft. The newest form of space travel is Space X.

  • Hubble space telescope was launched in 1990 aboard a space shuttle. It has showed us pictures of distant planets, stars and other galaxies.

19

Can we survive in Space?

  • Food, Water, Oxygen- The main ingredients for life

  • Experiments are done by groups of scientists to see whether plants can grow in space.

  • Plants- source of food, remove carbon dioxide, and produce oxygen!
