 2(3x1)2\left(3x-1\right)

Use the Distibutive Property to write an Equivalent Expression.

3

 2(3x1)2\left(3x-1\right)

  • 3x - 1 is being multiplied by 2. The 2 must multiply everything inside of the paranthesis.

  • Which terms are multiplied together first? (2 and 3x)

  •  23x=6x2\cdot3x=6x

  • Which terms are multiplied next? (2 and -1)

  •  21=22\cdot-1=-2

  • So, the expression equals 6x - 2.

4

Check your work: Are these equal?

 2(3x1)=6x22\left(3x-1\right)=6x-2

  • Choose a value for x. (x = 2)

  • Substitute and evaluate each expression.

  •  2(321)2\left(3\cdot2-1\right)  =  2(61)2\left(6-1\right)  = 2(5)2\left(5\right)  = 10

  •  6226\cdot2-2  = 12212-2  = 10

  • Yes. These are equal.
