This wee we are going to concentrate on reading rhythms only in simple time with a time signature of 4/4

That means rhythms with four crotchets to a bar

The note head and tail tell you the time value of the note in the bar. We use the English names for notes, unlike the Americans which call them by their numeric value

Rests, or silences in the bar, also have their own values

How to count a bar

When reading rhythm, it is uesful to think about the smallest practical devision of the bar. This is most often semiquavers, depending on the tempo. A system many use is One-E-and-A
