Spelling rule for dropping the 'e'.

The Silent 'e' rule

Words ending with a Silent final e (come, hope) are written without the e when adding an ending that begins with a vowel.

For example:

The rule for dropping the ‘e’ at the end of a word is to do it when adding a suffix beginning with a vowel. 

Word - 'hope'

suffix - 'ing'

hopeing - incorrect

hoping - correct

Suffixes

Suffixes are a letter or group of letters added to the ending of words to change their meaning or function.

When to keep the 'e'.

Generally speaking, words which end in consonants, can accept suffixes without modification.

- 'management'
