Valentine’s Day is a time to celebrate love and friendship and the joy of having other people in your life. It’s a day of flowers, candy
and cards decorated with hearts. In Greek mythology Cupid was the god of love. This special day’s origin, though, is not so rosy.
There are many theories on how Valentine’s Day began, but the most noted one begins in Rome in the year 268. Emperor Claudius II
wanted a cruel team of young men to fight in his armies. He found that when young men are in love or sharing their lives with a wife
and children, they tended to be more cautious.
Claudius banned marriage for those young men. Claudius banned love, but he could not stop it. Young men and women still fell in
love and wanted to become couples in the eyes of the church. A brave and romantic—priest named Valentine thought the law was
horribly unfair.
Valentine continued performing marriage ceremonies. The priest was found and killed, on February 14th. Centuries later, the
Catholic Church made priest a saint, one of three saints named “Valentine.” The word Valentine stands for or means - Valor
ღირსება , სიმამაცე. Nowadays it is celebrated on the 14th of February.
No one knows exactly when St. Valentine’s Day was first celebrated, but there is a poem and people think it was from the first
Valentine’s Day card, asking – “To be a Valentine”. It was sent from a prisoner in the Tower of London to his wife in the year 1415.
St. Valentine's Day is also mentioned in Shakespeare’s play – Hamlet.
Today, greeting card companies sell over a billion cards and teachers are - who receive the most cards. 35 Million Heart shaped
boxes of chocolates are sold on Valentine’s Day. More than 40 000 Americans are employed at chocolate companies. No one thinks
of tomatoes in this day, but this fruit is also known as the "love apple".
Conversation hearts were first made by “Necco” company.
220 Million roses are produced on Valentine’s day. California produces the most roses in the USA, but only Nebraska has a town
called Valentine. The average American spends $75 on Valentine’s Day. People send cards, flowers, chocolate and candy all around the world. People
spend the most money on Jewelry for Valentine's Day last year, but still chocolate is considered to be the best present.
Kids usually give each other Candy on Valentine's Day. Only 3% pet owners give their pets a gift on Valentine’s Day.
Happy St. Valentine’s Day. Tell everyone in your heart how much they mean to you.
