  • Real-time operating system (RTOS)

  • Single-user, single task

  • Single-user, multi-tasking

  • Multi-user

How operating systems interact with hardware and applications (p. 39)

  • Drivers: Drivers are software that is created to allow the computer to connect to other devices. Other devices include printers, sound cards, cell phones and USBs. The drivers issue commands to the device by sending and receiving data to and from the operating system

  • Memory management: RAM and ROM are examples of memory. Their function is to take information from a storage device such as the hard drive of a computer to be processed by the CPU. The less memory there is, the slower the processing.

  • CPU control: The CPU is the brain of the computer. It determines what and in what order processes should happen on the computer based on what the user wants to do.

  • Fans and cooling: Fans prevent the computer from overheating. Overheating can cause permanent damage to the computer.

4

Typical functions of the operating system (p. 39)

  • Activates the computer. This is when the computer starts or restarts

  • Performs basic computer tasks such as managing

  • Provides a graphical user interface so you can interact with the operating system
