What is an infinitive?

  • the original form of the verb

  • end in -ar, -er, or -ir

  • mean to _

  • example: hablar = to speak

What is conjugation?

  • changing the infinitive to include the subject

  • example: Hablar means to speak. When we conjugate in the yo form, we take off the -ar and add -o. Hablo means I speak.

Regular Verbs in Present Tense

  • follow a pattern

  • end in -ar, -er, or -ir

-Ar Verbs

  • To conjugate, take off -ar and add: -o, -as, -a, -amos, or -an

  • hablo (I speak)

  • hablas (you (tù) speak)

  • habla (he/she/Ud speaks)

  • hablamos (we speak)

  • hablan (they/y'all speak)

-Er Verbs

  • To conjugate take off -er and add: -o, -es, -e, -emos, -en

  • como (I eat)

  • comes (you (tú) eat)

  • come (he/she/Ud eats)

  • comemos (we eat)

  • comen (they/y'all eat)

  • To conjugate take off -ir and add: -o, -es, -e, -imos, -en

  • vivo (I live)
