Which of these digestive system organs does your food NOT travel through?
Stomach
Esophagus
Small Intestine
Liver
13
Mouth. The digestive process starts in your mouth when you chew. Your salivary glands make saliva, a digestive juice, which moistens food so it moves more easily through your esophagus into your stomach. Saliva also has an enzyme that begins to break down starches in your food.
14
Salivary glands
Salivary glands play an important role in digestion because they make saliva. Saliva helps moisten food so we can swallow it more easily. It also has an enzyme called amylase that makes it easier for the stomach to break down starches in food.
15
Pharynx
Also called the throat, the pharynx is the portion of the digestive tract that receives the food from your mouth. Branching off the pharynx is the esophagus, which carries food to the stomach, and the trachea or windpipe, which carries air to the lungs.
16
ESOPHAGUS.
The primary function of your esophagus is to carry food and liquid from your mouth to your stomach. When you swallow, food and liquid first move from your mouth to your throat (pharynx).
17
stomach
The stomach is a hollow organ, or "container," that holds food while it is being mixed with stomach enzymes. These enzymes continue the process of breaking down food into a usable form
18
Liver
The largest organ inside the body.
makes bile (fluid that helps break down fats and gets rid of wastes in the body
changes food into energy
clears alcohol and some medicines and poison from the blood
stores vitamins and iron
destroys old blood cells
19
Gallbladder
Your gallbladder is part of your digestive system. Its main function is to store bile. Bile helps your digestive system break down fats.
20
small intestine
It helps to further digest food coming from the stomach. It absorbs nutrients (vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, fats, proteins) and water from food so they can be used by the body.
21
Appendix
Normally, the appendix sits in the lower right abdomen. The function of the appendix is unknown. One theory is that the appendix acts as a storehouse for good bacteria, “rebooting” the digestive system after diarrheal illnesses.
22
Large Intestine
The purpose of the large intestine is to absorb water and salts from the material that has not been digested as food, and get rid of any waste products left over. By the time food mixed with digestive juices reaches your large intestine, most digestion and absorption has already taken place.
23
Pancreas
During digestion, your pancreas makes pancreatic juices called enzymes. These enzymes break down sugars, fats, and starches. Your pancreas also helps your digestive system by making hormones.
24
rectum
the lower end of the large intestine leading to the anus
stores and expels feces
25
Anus
The anus is the opening at the far end of the digestive tract through which stool leaves the body
26
Digestive system
is a collection of organs that breaks down food into energy. By the time you place food in your mouth, the digestive system starts working. The mouth, esophagus, stomach, and small intestines work together to break down food so that the body will absorb food nutrients.
27
The digestive system is essential to the human body. It helps break down the foods we eat into smaller components that can be absorbed by the cells in our body for energy. This process is known as digestion. The process of digestion involves grinding of the food, moving food through the digestive tract, breaking down large molecules, absorption of nutrients into the blood and removing waste from the body.
