Forms of Energy
by Lauren Olivares
2
Energy
Energy- the ability to do work.
Everything uses energy.
Energy never runs out, it simply changes form.
3
5 Types of Energy
Mechanical
Electrical
Light
Thermal
Sound
4
Mechanical Energy
Mechanical energy is the energy of motion and position.
Everything that moves is using mechanical energy.
Two types of mechanical energy
Potential and Kinetic
5
Potential Energy
Potential Energy- energy that is store in an object.
Potential energy depends on the position of an object.
An object's potential energy can be released as any form of energy, not just mechanical.
6
Kinetic Energy
Kinetic Energy- is the energy of motion.
Everything that moves is using kinetic energy.
7
Electrical Energy
Electrical energy is the movement of electrically charged particles. It flows through devices to power them.
Electrical energy can be transformed into other forms of energy.
8
Light Energy
Light energy is the energy of traveling waves that makes things visible to the eye.
9
Sound Energy
Sound energy- the energy of vibrations carried by air, water or other matter.
Vibrate- the back and forth motion of an object.
Things you can do with sound energy:
Hear it, See it, and Clean with it.
10
How Sound Energy Travels
Sound travels in waves called sound waves.
Sound waves travel out from the source.
11
Sound Travels
Sound energy can travel through solids, liquids, and gas.
Sound cannot travel through a vacuum ( a space with no matter).
Echo- When sound energy hits a solid object it bounces back and produces and echo.
12
Measuring Sound
Sound can be measured by
Pitch- how high or low a sound is
Frequency- how many times a sound wave vibrates
Volume- how loud or quiet a sound is.
13
Thermal Energy
Thermal Energy is the energy of moving particles.
Matter- physical particles that all things are made up of.
Temperature- Thermal energy is measured by temperature.
When matter moves quickly it heats up.
14
Movement of Thermal Energy
Fast moving particles have more thermal energy and give off more heat.
Slow moving particles have less energy and give off less heat.
Heat travels from a warmer object to a cooler one.
15
Good Conductors- A good thermal conductor is material that can transfer heat energy.
Metals are good conductors.
Thermal energy can only be exchanged if the two materials are different temperatures.
Bad Conductors- cloth, wood, and rubber.
These materials are meant to keep heat in so it cannot be transmitted or exchanged.
Conductors- a material or device that transmits energy.
16
Insulator
Insulator- a substance or material that does not allow the passage of energy- thermal or sound.
Examples are plastic, rubber, and cloth.
