What are conditionals in English grammar?

Conditionals -

• describe the result of something that might happen (in the present or future) or might have happened but didn't (in the past)

• Zero Conditional

• First Conditional

• Second Conditional

• Third Conditional

Meaning

Second conditional is used in situations/actions in the present or future which are not likely to happen or are imaginary, hypothetical or impossible.

e.g. If I won the lottery, I would travel around the world and buy a castle.

I think it is very unlikely that I will win the lottery. However, in this unlikely condition, I will travel and buy a castle.

Form (structure)

If + past + would + verb

Additional points

Other modal verbs can be used in place of would: could / might 

If I were ...

with the verb to be we use IF + I / HE / SHE / IT + WERE
