LESSON 3: SIMPLE PAST TENSE

USE / USO

WE USE PAST SIMPLE TO TALK ABOUT THINGS THAT HAPPENED IN THE PAST AND HAVE ENDED ALREADY / USAMOS EL PASADO SIMPLE PARA HABLAR DE COSAS QUE OCURRIERON EN EL PASADO Y YA ACABARON.

For example:

• I did my homework yesterday.

• I went to the meeting, but no one arrived.

• I tried really hard, but I didn't pass the exam.

• She loved my gift.

• He saved my dog!

For example:

• You were in the bus stop!

• They enjoyed the party!

• She was here last night.

• It got dirty.

• It broke when I touched it.

For example:

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was an Austrian

musician and composer. He lived from 1756 to

1791. He started composing at the age of five

and wrote more than 600 pieces of music.

He was only 35 years old when he died.

lived/started/wrote/was/died are all past simple

Structure / Estructura

Affirmative Form

Subject + verb in past + complement.

Be careful with the use of regular and irregular verbs.

Past Simple - Negative Form

Sujeto + didn't + verbo + complemento.

Cuando se niega una acción en pasado simple, hace su aparición el auxiliar Did en su forma negativa Did not o Didn't. Devolviendo al verbo a su forma infinitivo ya sean verbos regulares o irregulares. Por ejemplo:

Past Simple - Interrogative

Did + sujeto + verbo + complemento + ?

Cuando se realiza una pregunta en pasado simple, hace su aparición el auxiliar Did, quien se sitúa al principio de la pregunta y devuelve al verbo su forma infinitivo ya sea este un verbo regular o irregular. Por ejemplo:

Structure:

• Con verbos regulares:    

  Forma afirmativa                    She loved       (Ella amó) 

  Forma interrogativa                Did she love?      (¿Amó Ella?)

  
  

• Con verbos irregulares

  Forma afirmativa                 She ate her lunch.            (Ella comió)
