When do we use the -au spelling?

We ~usually~ use the -au spelling when

  • we hear the sound at the beginning of a syllable or word

  • auto

  • auction

  • August

We also use the the -au spelling when

  • we hear the sound in the middle of the syllable or word

  • taut

  • fraud

  • fault

We learned last week that we use the -aw spelling

  • when we hear the sound at the end of the syllable or word

  • or when the sound is followed by an n or l
