Exploring the Frontier
Reminder: The colonists settled and couldn't go across which mountains?
Appalachian! - What was that thing called when KG3 told the colonists to stay on their side of the mountain?
Proclamation of 1763!
Well guess what? It was time for people to start crossing it.
But it wasn't easy.
Oh, anyone know of any explorers from back then?
3
Daniel Boone
Hunter and pioneer = one of the first of a group of people to enter or settle in a region
1769 - DB went through a narrow passage (Cumberland Gap) across the App Mt. in Virginia
After crossing, they saw land where American Indians hunted and farmed. DB wanted to live there too.
So DB helped clear a new road through the Cumberland Gap. This was called the Wilderness Road.
DB helped his family and other famlies cross the App Mt and start new towns and lives.
4
Life on the Frontier
Soon thousands crossed the App Mt looking for cheap farmland.
Settlers entered frontiers = edge of a country or settled area.
American Indians were on that land already.
So what do you think happened?
Fights!
But they also learned ideas from each other.
5
Traveling West
How did people travel back then?
Wagons! - packed with food and supplies - not much room for peeps
How do you think the roads were like back then?
Rocky, dirt, no bridges to cross rivers - wagons often broke
What could be an easier and more comfortable way?
Rivers! - less bumpy and faster - Ohio River was most popular - what type of boat was used?
Flatboats! = large rectangular boat covered by a roof - also went on canals = waterway built for boat travel and shipping
6
Making a Home
When pioneers got to a frontier, they have to build their homes! - cut down trees in the woods
Inside of the home - table, bed, spinning wheel, few dishes
Grew corn, grains, raised farm animals - just enough for their own families
Frontier life was hard! - especially for women
Men hunted - women took care of children and farms
Even though life was hard, they knew they had it better than before.
7
Chief Logan
Uh oh, what do you think I'm going to tell you?
Conflict! - What did the American Indians believe about land?
They thought no one can own land. It's to be shared.
They agreed to let settles hunt on the land, but not own it.
Chief Logan (Mingo) had been friendly to pioneers. But in 1774, settlers murdered his family.
Chief Logan then attacked back, of course.
This was the beginning of more fights. Stay tuned...
