What is Algebra?
Arithmetic deals with operations on
numbers while algebra uses variables, or letters, to create mathematical
models to represent the world around us. These mathematical models are
expressed as algebraic equations that can be solved to find an unknown
value, or can be studied to identify trends and make predictions.
3
Mathematical Words for Algebra
Sum: A sum of two or more numbers is the answer to an addition
problem.
Difference: A difference between two numbers is the answer to a
subtraction problem.
Quotient: A quotient is the answer to a division problem.
Product: A product is the answer to a multiplication problem.

Trickier Translations
The quantity of: The quantity of indicates that there are two or more
terms combined to make one term.
The sum of and the difference of: These two terms are like the
quantity of and are illustrated with parentheses.
From: Subtract eight from 10 is written as 10 – 8 and not 8 – 10.
Less than: Two less than 20 is written as 20 – 2 and not 2 – 20
Twice: Twice as much as the original $50 price is written as 2 × $50
Triple: Triple the amount of last year’s 4,000 attendees is written as
3 × 4,000

Defining Parts of an Algebraic Expression
It is important that you know the meanings
of these words since they will be used to explain more involved procedures
with algebraic equations.
Constant: A fixed number that remains the same and does not
change.
Variable: A letter or symbol that represents a number in an algebraic
expression.
Coefficient: The number or symbol multiplied by a variable in an
algebraic expression.
Term: A number, variable, or a coefficient multiplied by one or more
variables.
Factor: Numbers that are multiplied together in an algebraic expression
Algebraic expression: A mathematical sequence containing one or
more variables or numbers connected by addition or subtraction.
