Siddhartha escapes the palace several times. On his first journey, he encounters an old man. His second journey he saw a man shrunken by disease. On a third ride, he saw a dead man. On his final ride, he met a holy man who seemed content despite being homeless and owning nothing.

• Decided to give up his princely life filled with luxury and power

• Began study with Hindu gurus (teachers) who taught him meditation

• Later joined with ascetics- people who deny themselves physical comforts to seek a spiritual goal

• Six years of fasting and meditation

• Renewed his search- meditated under a fig tree for 49 days

• Finally reached an awareness that freed him from earthly ties

Enlightenment

He became known as Buddha- The Enlightened One
